This Knowlton Web Site is an experiment in collaborative genealogy. Through
the mailing list, it is a place to share information.
But it is also a
form of electronic publishing;
a place to record
a growing body of information gathered by a large number of people.
I see the objectives of this site as being:
- to provide a place on the web which could be found by people using search
engines like
AltaVista, either for genealogical
information,
or simply seeking their own Knowlton name to see "what's out there" ...
- to provide a "consensus" version of the William Knowlton genealogy;
- to provide a place for other Knowlton lines, which may not be
connected to William Knowlton of Kent;
- to provide pointers to other sources of information, both printed
and electronic; and,
- to provide a record of the exchanges of information which take place
through the mail list.
Additional material, comments, suggestions are welcome and important.
Data, or course, is also important.
I would urge anyone with an interest in the Knowlton family:
- to share their family data with us;
- to contribute background information, biographical sketches, etc.
- to help in the shaping and content of this site.
If you have Knowlton family history data, either in automated form
(GEDCOM or BK5 files), or in paper form, you can contribute it for
addition to the common database (which is available for downloading
from the FTP site). If you would like to mount your own web page,
let us know where it is, and we will add a hot link to it.
I would like to thank Benetech for providing me with the time and
resources for following this crazy inclination (and my family,
for putting up with it).
