Richard Knowlton, my wife's 10th great-grandfather was born in 1553, at Knowlton Manor, Kent County, England. Knowlton Manor is situated about six miles from the great Catheral at Canterbury. The name Knowlton reaches back to the time of William the Conqueror, 1066-87.

Richard Knowlton married Elizabeth Cantize, her 1oth great-grandmother on July 17, 1577. They had 4 children. William, her 9th great-grandfather was the last child born in 1584 in England.

"William Knowlton, commonly called Captain William, with his remaining family sailed for America about 1632. He died on the passage and was probably buried at Nova Scotia, as an ancient grave-stone

bearing the name of William Knowlton 1632, was discovered there by a land-surveyor in 1839. The family appear to have moved to Massachuetts the next year, probably to Hingham, later to Ipswich."

Ann Elizabeth Smith, her 9th great-grandmother was born about 1584 in England and died in America. William Knowlton and Ann Elizabeth Smith were married about 1604. They had 6 children, the first two children died young. William, her 8th great-grandfather, was the 4th child born. The order of the last four is not known for sure, only that William was the second son.
