Subject: Good Simple Family Research Example

For all of you interested in expanding your skills in research and in producing something from that research, I recommend your reading "The Identity of William A. Wiltsie" by John P. Crispell in THE NY GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD, vol 128, #3 (July 1997), often available in large libraries, especially in the northeast.

Mr. Crispell does not appear to be a professional, is researching his wife's line, does not live in NY, and has written a mere three pages on Wiltsie. But it is a wonderful example of what we could all do. There are 27 footnotes. Mr. Wiltsie apparently was born in the latter part of the 18th century, and no birth, death, or marriage records have been found for him. Nevertheless, Crispell uses NY vital records (late 19th c.), wills, newspapers, gravestones, published books and genealogical magazines, church records, deeds, city directories, and <gr> the US census together with some educated guess work to come up with an identifiable person. Wiltsie and his family lived in both city and country, so a wide number of techniques are illustrated.

Subject: Stocking and the Errata still on Sale

For those of you wanting to purchase Charles Stocking's The History and Genealogy of the Knowltons......, 1897, I still see the ad in GENEALOGICAL HELPER that a rapid-copy is on sale at Higginson's for $55, so I will repeat my old message.

>If you would like to purchase the Stocking history, a reprint (facsimile, nicely hardbound) is done by Higginson's Books in Salem, MA, for $55. (called a "sale" but always the same price all the years I have seen it advertised in the Genealogical Helper). I ordered with credit card by dialing 508-745-7170 (M-F, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST) or faxing to 508-745-8025. I got my Errata in paper cover as it is a thinner book (234 pp.)and so saved a small amount of money.<

DO NOT FAIL to order the ERRATA AND ADDENDA with the index by Geo. Knowlton (1903) also as Stocking is so full of errors. Also, I do not recommend you invest so much money unless you have at least several generations of Knowltons in your line. The books were filmed by the LDS and are in major genealogical libraries.
