I have checked Stocking and the Errata for Lyman Knowlton Phillips without finding any Phillips-Knowlton marriages that included a Lyman in their immediate families. It is true that the Lyman Knowltons generally occur in branches that went from MA up through VT and then to Stuckley, PQ, Canada, many of them later returning to the US.

If Mr. Phillips died in NH, I would try the 1900 census to see where he was born. Also look for an obituary. Surely there was one for someone who lived to be 99. At any rate, for as long as he and his family were in the US, you can trace them back through each census and pick up vital records in the various townships.

If he did live in Canada part of the time, there are other list members who have become authorities on Canadian records or you can purchase a book that will lead you through the research.

Let us know what happens.

Subject: KNOWLTON, MILDRED OR BUTCH

In researching my grandparents (Carl F. Smith - born Aug. 1897, Nashua, New Hampshire, and Alice A. Bentley - born Nov. 1898, Dorchester, Mass.) I have come across the names MILDRED and BUTCH KNOWLTON. My dad seems to think Butch Knowlton may be one of his cousins. Carl's father was Frederick B. Smith. I believe Frederick's other children were Ted, Arthur, Bob, Grace, and Lillian. I don't know where these other children were born, but Carl married and lived in Massachusetts, then Florida. The last address I have for Mildred is in Dunedin, Florida. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know.

Thanks.

A very nice lady named June at Higgensons will search the indexes for any books you may be interested in and let you know via e-mail if your ancestors are included.

Most books are printed on demand and take approximately 10 weeks to receive.

If you should find a book you are interested in listed on another website you should still inquire at Higgensons. I recently found a book about the History of New Ipswich, NH, on the New Hampshire website. New Ipswich, NH  is where my Benjamin Knowlton and Phoebe Wright lived.

Higgensons not only had that book with two Knowltons (one of them Benjamin) in the index. They also had another History of New Ipswich, NH with two columns of  Knowltons in the index. My Knowltons were in the index.

The second book was on the shelf at Higgensons and is now on its way to me. June also told me books may be returned if in salable condition. I would suggest that it is easier to ask a lot of questions before purchasing as most of these books are very expensive.

Another book available at Higgensons, The History of Westchester County, which would be very helpful to me was so expensive that I checked inter-library-loan.  My local small town librarian found it available in 5 other states. Eventually it will arrive Libraries in New York have sent me selected pages from this book and I felt that I would find much more about my family if I could read this book my self.

If anyone had Knowlton's in Westchester County or New Ipswich, NH and would care to send a little inf. about their Knowltons I would be glad to watch for them, after the books arrive.

Sincerely ...................:) Marilyn
