Hi, Bob:
This is great--you have taken one of Stocking's lines down to the present.
>Ezekiel Knowlton + Anna Miles
Levi Knowlton (1768-1842) + Philena ? (1776-1850)
Miles E. Knowlton (1809-1882) + Belina Ellis (1801-1876)
Lyman Knowlton (1833- ??) + Sarah Miriah Potter (1834-1920)
Lyman Potter Knowlton (1874-1955)<
Lyman Jr. is #5867 in Stocking. Even with corrections from the Errata, however, nothing is said about his mother being a Porter. Rather, she is listed as Maria S. Patton. I assume you have her death certificate and marriage record to refute this.
(3446) Lyman Sr. is given as born in 1834, married Maria in 1856,
no death date given. Were they still in Canada at the end of his life?
(1435) Miles E. born 1809 (as you say), married Belena Ellis, 1831. He died in Quebec in 1876, according to Stocking. Again, this is probably
wrong, just needs some documentation.
(564) Levi, date of birth given as 1769 [might be baptism], married 1) Polly Morse, 1801; 2) Mrs. Butterfield--there is your Philena?--presumably a widow, prob. by 1809. Levi removed to Potton, Quebec, about 1800, with several siblings. He died in 1842 (as you say) at Knowlton Landing, Quebec.
(265) Ezekiel, born May 11, 1736, married Anna Miles, Oct. 4, 1759. They resided in Westminster or in Templeton or both. A history of Wardsboro [now where did I get this--from either Claude Beckwith or Steve Hunter?--think this may be MA too] stated that Ezekiel was born and died in Templeton, MA. He was the son of (129) Ezekiel, a deacon, of Manchester and Shrewsbury, MA. He was born either June 10, 1707 [Stocking Errata] or Mar 5, 1701[Wardsboro history], and I will not vouch for either. He married Susannah Morgan, Jan 16, 1728, and died Mar 14, 1774, I assume in Shrewsbury where he was a bigshot. Details in Stocking and the Errata. He left his son (265) money and his carpenter's tools. You should be able to search Shrewsbury town records to confirm all this. Depending on his birthdate, his mother varies. His father was (21) Thomas, born May 19, 1662, in Ipswich, and he appears on the Knowlton web page; is also the half brother of my 6th great grandfather Ephraim (24A). Thomas married 1) Margery Goodhue, Dec 2, 1692, and 2) Mary Coy, June 6, 1706, and died Feb. 4, 1749 [new calendar 1750].
ALL THESE DATES WOULD NEED RESEARCH TO ORIGINAL RECORDS as they are just from secondary sources, books that are not sourced.
Some of Ezekiel's (129) sisters were married to Bigelows who were old enough to serve in the Revolutionary War and fought in the Battle of White Plains, Westchester Co., NY, where my Knowlton line had moved by 1700. Since the generations were only second cousins, it is possible they had some contact. All the Bedford, NY, town records were burned by a British raid in 1779; and I have spent a decade trying to figure out my line in the 18th century. Be happy your ancestors were in Shrewsbury, MA.
Hope those more closely related will chime in.
