1. Robert Knowlton, b. about 1800, Ireland, d. 30 AUG 1886, Toronto.
According to Necropolis records, Robert died at age 86 from "senile decay".
Robert Knowlton moved to Cleveland (according to Leo) after the death of
his son Thomas and his wife (taking son Samuel with him).
Leo talks about a family of 5 brothers coming from Enland: two landed in
Nova Scotia, and moved to Quebec; the other three carried on to Boston.
Billy tells a similar story, with all five having landed in Boston, and 2
having moved to Quebec. (I have to assume that this is based on
misinformation from Stocking).
Billy also talks about having met a Dr. John Knowlton from MA in
St. Petersburg, whose family has similar names.

listed MAWK and her son Thomas (both on the deceased list), as Wesleyan
Methodists.

Originally, it seemed that WHK had married twice, but it now seems (and Joan
Ayers agrees) that he married only once, to Roseanne Carkeek, who had two
children from a previous marriage. The only (surviving?) child from her first
marriage was Lily Bennett. The surviving children from the second were
William, Arthur and Thomas. Leo noted that WHK had a business supplying
horses to the Fire Department, and that several children were killed by
horses in their youth.
In the 1871 census, WHK (at age 29) is listed as a Flour dealer, and being
born in Quebec of Irish extraction.
From the Globe and Mail obituary, May 21, 1930 (which includes a picture)
"Born in Montreal on April 7, 1842 ... early venture was to supply horses
to the Toronto Fire Department ... school trustee ... a member of All Saints
Church for 35 years ... member of St. Johns Masonic Lodge and the Orange
Lodge (Temperance Lodge 301) ... survived by William J., Arthur S., Thomas E.,
and a stepdaughter, Mrs. B.H.Bennett"
Cause of death in Necropolis records is "myocardial failure".

Billy Knowlton remembers Samuel as having lived in Cleveland; this fits with
Leo's memory of Robert having moved to Cleveland (and taken Samuel with him
as a child)

to me by Elizabeth Knowlton, and I need to check to make sure that the
Samuel Knowlton she found is my Samuel Knowlton.
She gives his Cleveland address as 50 Halsey St.

According to Billy Knowlton, Uncle Willy was left $50,000 in the estate of
Wm H., but he only outlived his father by about a year. He lived in the
Beach (on Wineva?) in Toronto. (According to the Globe death notice, he
was "late of 290 Broadview; service at his residence, 25 Glen Manor Dr."
In St. John's, WJK, wife Emma and child Lois Bernice are buried
in Section 2, Range 1, Grave 62.

For many years Sec.Treasurer of William H. Knowlton's business; in around
1930 (just before W.H.K.'s death), WHK bought Childrens' Wear as a business
for T.E. to run; he did so until his death, though he never liked it. T.E.
also lived in the house next door to his fathers', which his father had bought
for him (WHK felt he had to provide for his youngest child).
Necropolis records show death on 14 Dec '41; earlier, I had 17 Dec. ...
cause of death "acute meningitis".
